PRESIDENT'S UNDERGRADUATE
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
I. REFERENCE:
Guidelines on the President's Undergraduate Fellowship Program,
transmitted by Vice President Johnson's memorandum, January 6, 1975.
II. POLICY:
The President's Undergraduate Fellowship Program is designed to
assist unusually talented undergraduate students to pursue original
research or other. creative projects under faculty supervision
during the academic year and/or vacation periods. At UCSB, the
program is administered through the Office of Financial Aid.
A. Selection of Recipients:
Upon the recommendation of the Committee on Undergraduate
Honors, Scholarships, and Prizes, the Chancellor will select
the fellows and inform the President, through the Vice
President, Budget and University Relations, of the name of the
fellow, his or her address, the amount of stipend, the title or
nature of the project or study being undertaken and the name,
academic title, and department of the sponsoring faculty
member.
B. Amount of Stipend:
The stipend is to be scaled to the cost of the study or
project, and may not exceed $1,000. The amount a student is
able to contribute to the project shall be subtracted from the
estimated total cost; the difference up to $1,000 may be
awarded to the student as a fellowship:
1. The student's budget for the project or study is to be
approved by the faculty sponsor.
2. Major items of nonexpendable equipment are not to be
purchased with fellowship funds.
3. The stipend may include a travel allowance, if such is
necessary to complete the project. If appropriate, living
expenses also may be provided.
C. Award of Fellowships:
The fellowships will be awarded on behalf of the President and
the Chancellor. (Upon receipt of the information listed in
paragraph II.A. above, funds will be transferred to the campus
to cover the awards made.) An honorary fellowship, without
stipend, may be awarded if considered appropriate by the
Chancellor.
D. Terms of Award:
1. A President's Undergraduate Fellow may receive academic
credit for his or her work.
2. The fellowship is for one year and is not renewable. A
student must complete the project while still an
undergraduate.
3. The recipient will submit a report to the sponsoring
faculty member upon completion of the study or project,
and this report along with the sponsor's comments will be
forwarded to the Committee on Undergraduate Honors,
Scholarships, and Prizes. The product of the research or
study is the property of the student, subject to any
restrictions or conditions which may be applicable by the
terms of contracts with or grants from extramural funds
sources.
