MINIMUM ACADEMIC PROGRESS
FOR FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY
I. REFERENCES:

Opportunity Program National Defense Student Loan Program
Work-Study Program
B. University of California policies in regard to eligibility for
various funds.
C. California State Scholarship and Loan Commission policies in
regard to eligibility for receipt of California State
Scholarships and College Opportunity Grants.
II. POLICY:
The Federal and state funds utilized to assist needy students
require that "satisfactory academic progress" towards a degree
objective be maintained by the recipient in order to qualify for
continued assistance.
A. Regularly Enrolled:
The student must be enrolled in a regularly prescribed
curriculum which is oriented towards the attainment of a
specific degree.
B. Undergraduate Students:
Undergraduate students must pass at least 36 units each
academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters) during which
aid is received. Those undergraduate students completing
between 24 and 35 units in an academic year are placed on
financial aid warning status. Aid is not withheld from the
student placed on the warning status so long as the student
passes at least 36 units each year for the remainder of
undergraduate enrollment at UCSB. Students who are not making
satisfactory academic progress will be placed on financial aid
suspension status. Students are placed on financial aid
suspension status if they pass less than 6 units in one
quarter, or pass less than 36 units in a year during which they
are on financial aid warning status. While on financial aid
suspension, a student cannot receive university, state, or
federal aid for a minimum of one calendar year from the time of
the suspension. Undergraduate aid recipients are expected to
complete their graduate requirements within five years. Thus, a
student may receive aid for a maximum of 15 quarters.
C. Limited Status and University extension Students:
To receive aid, a student must be enrolled in a program of
study leading to a degree. University Extension and limited
status students do not meet this requirement; therefore,
students in these programs are not eligible for financial aid
at UCSB.
D. Graduate Students:
The Graduate Division and the individual graduate departments
monitor the academic progress of graduate students, and the
concept of "normative time" is applied. Normative time is the
number of years considered reasonable for completion of a
particular Ph.D. program by a full-time student. Duration
varies by department, from 4.5 to 8 years, and is measured from
the time the student begins graduate study at any level.
Exceptions to the above policy can be made only upon the
approval of the Chancellor or his designee.
