                  PREVENTIVE MEDICAL ACTIVITIES
                 OF THE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES
  
  I.   REFERENCES:
       
       A.   UCSB Policies Manual, Policy 4200, Student Health Service.
       
  II.  POLICY:
       
       In coordination with other campus departments, Student Health
       Service conducts the following preventive medical activities,
       usually on a fee-for-service basis:
       
       A.   Required physical examination of students for Scuba Diving,
            Student Teaching, and Education Abroad Programs.
       
       B.   Advice on public health hazards (animal control, water safety,
            food poisoning, disposal of waste, insect control).
       
       C.   Immunization will be provided to students, faculty, and staff
            on a fee-for-service basis. Allergy desensitization injections
            are not given to non-students.
       
       D.   Tuberculosis testing of new foreign students and those exposed
            to known cases of tuberculosis.
       
       E.   Testing for intestinal parasites for foreign students and those
            returning from Education Abroad Program in areas where
            parasitic diseases are endemic.
       
       F.   Liaison with Environmental Health and Safety Office in
            providing facilities, instruction, and other assistance in
            wide-spread emergencies.
       
       G.   Reports to Environmental Health and Safety Office all injuries
            in which hazardous environmental conditions may be a factor in
            the injury.
       
       H.   Required physical examinations for participation in
            intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports.
       
       I.   Dissemination of information, through health education programs
            using printed materials and individual or group discussion, on
            early detection, treatment, and prevention of such conditions
            as venereal disease, respiratory disease, dental disease,
            obesity, malnutrition, drug abuse, eye disease, and cancer.
       
       J.   Pre-employment physical examinations for applicants referred by
            the Staff Personnel Office.
