Glossary
- Aggravated Assault:
- an unlawful attack by one person upon the person of
another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This
type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means
likely to produce death or great bodily harm.
- Arson:
- any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or
without intent to defraud, a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or
aircraft, personal property of another, etc.
- Assault:
- see aggravated assault or simple assault.
- Auto Theft:
- see Motor Vehicle Theft.
- Bias Motivated:
- no person, whether or not acting under color of law,
shall by force or threat of force, willfully injure, intimidate, interfere
with, oppress, or threaten any other person or, shall knowingly deface, damage,
or destroy the real or personal property of any other person for the purpose of
intimidating or interfering, with the free exercise or enjoyment of any right
or privilege secured to him or her by the Constitution or laws of this state or
by the Constitution or laws of the United States because of the other person's
race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, gender, or sexual
orientation, or because he or she perceives that the other person has one or
more of those characteristics.
- Bomb, Actual:
- all violations of regulations or statutes controlling the
carrying, using, possessing, furnishing, and manufacturing of explosives and
explosive devices.
- Bomb, Threat:
- the reporting of a bomb or explosive device that has or
will be placed in any public or private place, knowing that such information is
false.
- Burglary:
- the unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft.
Attempted forcible entry is included.
- Disturbing The Peace:
- fighting, or challenging to fight, in a public
place; disturbing others by loud and unreasonable noise; or using offensive
words likely to produce violent reaction.
- Driving Under The Influence:
- driving or operating any vehicle or common
carrier while under the influence of alcoholic beverage or narcotics.
- FBI Crime Index Offenses:
- seven offenses chosen to serve as an index for
gauging fluctuations in the overall volume and rate of crime. Known jointly as
the Crime Index, these offenses include the violent crimes of murder and
nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and the
property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
- Felony:
- a crime which is punishable with death or by imprisonment in the
state prison.
- Forcible Rape:
- see Rape.
- Forgery/NSF:
- signing the name of another person without authority to do
so or falsely making, altering, forging, or counterfeiting documents, etc.;
making or delivering a check with insufficient funds.
- Homicide:
- see Willful Homicide.
- Infraction:
- an offense punishable by a fine or other penalty, but not by
incarceration.
- Larceny-Theft:
- the unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of
property from the possessing or constructive possession of another (except
embezzlement, fraud, forgery, and worthless checks). Attempted larceny-theft is
included.
- Miscellaneous Offenses:
- violations of state or local laws, except
traffic violations and those listed elsewhere in the report.
- Misdemeanor:
- a crime punishable by imprisonment in a county jail, by
fine, or by both. Under certain conditions a felony crime can be
treated as a misdemeanor.
- Motor Vehicle Theft:
- the theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
- Narcotics:
- state and local offenses relating to the unlawful possession,
sale, use, growing, and manufacturing or narcotic drugs.
- Nonaggravated Assault: see Simple
Assault.
- Property Crime:
- defined by UCR as structure burglary, larceny-theft,
motor vehicle theft, and arson.
- Public Drunkenness:
- offenses related to drunkenness or intoxication.
Excluded is "driving under the influence."
- Rape:
- the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will, is
incapable to give consent due to mental disorder, developmental or physical
disability, intoxication, or unconsciousness, or if the act is committed by
trickery. Assaults or attempts to commit rape or threat of force are
included.
- Robbery:
- the taking or attempting to take anything of value from the
care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or
violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.
- Sex Offenses - Non Violent:
- any sexual offense other than rape that did
not involve physical contact; e.g., indecent exposure, solicitation of lewd or
dissolute conduct, loitering for the purpose of engaging in lewd conduct,
etc.
- Sex Offenses - Violent:
- any sexual offense other than rape that included
physical contact; e.g., child molestation that did not include rape, sexual
battery, statutory rape, etc.
- Simple Assault:
- assaults and attempted assaults where no weapon was used
and which did not result in serious or aggravated injury to the victim.
- Stolen Property:
- buying, receiving, and possessing stolen property,
including attempts.
- Trespass:
- certain acts willfully committed on private or public lands
e.g., refusal to leave a public building upon request when the
building is closed for business.
- UCR:
- see Uniform Crime Reports.
- Uniform Crime Reports:
- a federal reporting system which provides data on
crime based on police statistics submitted by law enforcement agencies in the
nation.
- Vandalism:
- willful or malicious destruction, injury, or disfigurement of
any public or private property, real or personal, without consent of owner or
persons having custody or control.
- Vehicle Code-All Other:
- vehicle code violations, other than infractions
(except driving under the influence and hit and run).
- Vehicle Code-Hit And Run:
- failure of a driver involved in an accident to
stop at the accident scene and notify the property owner and/or police.
- Vehicle Theft:
- see Motor Vehicle Theft
- Violent Crime:
- defined by UCR as willful homicide, forcible rape,
robbery, and aggravated assault.
- Weapons:
- all violations of regulations or statutes controlling the
carrying, using, possessing, furnishing, and manufacturing of deadly weapons.
Attempts are included.
- Willful Homicide:
- the willful (nonnegligent) killing of one human being
by another. Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter are included.
